How to Choose a Watch for Your Wrist Size

How to Choose A Watch for Your Wrist

Watches come in many shapes and sizes. They may be thin and delicate, thick and sturdy, or anywhere in between. They come this way for a reason as not all watches look the same on every wrist. A disproportionate piece can look odd and can throw off one’s entire outfit. We have written this guide to help ensure that you get a timepiece that looks good and fits well. Note that this is just a series of guidelines, and some will choose something outside of the recommended limits to suit their aesthetic.

What is Your Wrist Size?

Figuring out the diameter of your wrist is the first step. Luckily, it is easy to figure out. Get a tape measure, or an appropriately labeled piece of paper, and then roll it around your wrist. Mark where it overlaps with a pencil, ideally where you would like the timepiece’s case to be. Unfold the measuring tape and calculate the length. If your wrist is 14-16cm, it is commonly considered to be very thin. 16-17cm is indicative of a slender wrist. Meanwhile, 17cm-18cm is a medium, or average, wrist. Anything above 18cm is considered to be a thick wrist.

What Watch Suits What Wrist?

The first thing to consider is the diameter of the timepiece. Most men’s watches are between 38-46mm. Timepieces outside this range tend to be too small or clunky. If your wrist is between 14-18cm, it is advisable to pick a 38-42mm watch. Otherwise, it may look cartoonishly large. If you have a medium or above wrist, pick a case between 44-46mm. Something smaller or thicker may look disproportionate between the case and your wrist. Meanwhile, a watch strap should be roughly half the watch's diameter. Of course, this is just a guideline, as a dress watch may have a thinner band.
